CHINESE NEW YEAR 2024 – YEAR OF THE WOOD DRAGON

On the Chinese Zodiac calendar, 2024 marks the Year of the Wood Dragon, a sign associated with power, honor, and success.

In China, Korea, Vietnam, and other countries in East Asia, the Lunar New Year on February 10th marks the beginning of a new year and the arrival of spring. People return home to celebrate with family and friends. Banquets and reunion meals are enjoyed, fireworks and firecrackers are set off to drive away evil and bring good luck, red envelopes (hóngbao), with money are exchanged, and houses are decorated using symbols of good luck, prosperity, and longevity.

Across New York City, locals and visitors alike will be getting together to welcome the New Year. You, too, can join in the fun. Embrace the traditional lion dances and ribbon twirling performances by the New York Chinese Cultural Center on Saturday, February 3rd and 10th, happening three times daily (1 PM, 3 PM, 5 PM) at 20 Hudson Yards in Manhattan. There will also be puppet shows, calligraphy arts and traditional crafts, poetry readings, and concerts highlighting the best Lunar New Year festivities.

Check online for the many event calendars detailing the activities across the five boroughs.

Gung hay fat choy! It's Lunar New Year season.
