THE STUDIO MUSEUM HARLEM
The Studio Museum in Harlem is an excellent Museum in Northern Manhattan that celebrates African American art and ideas and shares them with the world. In 1979, The New York Bank gave local artists a space to exhibit their work in.
The museum was founded by artists, activists, and philanthropists who wanted to use their art to educate people about the African American experience. It was the first Museum of African or Latino descent recognized by the American Alliance of Museums, proving its influence nationally. The Museum has also received international acclaim, and artists from around the world compete to be accepted into the Artist-in-Residence program.
The Artist-in-Residence program makes this museum "Studio" like. The Museum cultivates natural talent and fosters some of the most renowned artists worldwide. The goal of the Museum is to create a bridge between African artists and people from various backgrounds. Art is a great way to share your view of the world and how you perceive it. This Museum allows people to share that perception with the world.
The Museum offers many ways for viewers to enjoy the works on exhibit. From performances and tours to educational programs and talks for people of all ages, the Museum tries to make the experience interactive. Despite having opened towards the end of the 20th Century, the Museum reflects African and African American art from as far back as the 1800s. It is a fantastic space to learn about a culture that may be different from your own and is also a great place to take people from ages 2-92. There is no limit on who this art might speak to, so grab a friend, your grandpa, or your nephew and go check out the museum!
