SAINT PATRICKS DAY

March 9,2023 | By Sovereign Associates |

St Patrick was a 5th-century priest, who converted the pagan Irish to Christianity in the 5th century. Tradition holds that he died on 17 March, the day he is honored in the yearly calendar. As the day approaches, many people around the world begin to plan how they will celebrate this famous Irish holiday. From parades to traditional Irish food and drink, there are many ways to embrace your Irish heritage and honor Saint Patrick himself.

Traditional Irish foods and drinks is enjoyed, dishes like corned beef and cabbage, Irish stew, and soda bread, are eaten, all of which are delicious and easy to prepare. Exploring traditional Irish folk music & watching lively Irish step dancing is also a favorite.

Today's Saint Patrick's Day celebrations have been greatly influenced by those that developed among the Irish diaspora, especially in North America. It is a day to celebrate Irish culture, heritage and traditions. Every year, people all over the world dress up in green, don shamrocks and march in vibrant parades to commemorate this special day.

The NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of New York City’s greatest traditions. The first parade was on March 17, 1762. Today, the NYC Parade marches up 5th Avenue and is reviewed from the steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York. The tradition of marching past St. Patrick’s Cathedral has remained unchanged with the exception of the address. In the early years, the Parade would march past the Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral (now Basilica) located at the corner of Mott and Prince Streets in SoHo. The parade starts at 44th Street and 5th Avenue at 11am and proceeds up the avenue to 79th Street.

St Patrick's Day is the perfect day to show your Irish pride and to celebrate the culture of the Emerald Isle. Whether you are Irish or not, it is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the spirit and traditions of the Irish.
