READY TO MOVE INTO YOUR NEW APARTMENT?

May 23,2023 | By Sovereign Associates |

Preparing for your move a month before may seem like a long time but believe me, those four weeks will go by fast. It takes about this time to get your 'mail forwarding' to kick in after changing your address at the post office. However, don't have packages or furniture sent to your new apartment before you move in—it's not your Super's responsibility to look after these things for you, and you'll want to start with a good relationship with your Super, who will be glad to be helpful on your move-in day. Tipping them the day you move in is a great gesture too.

Also, please make a note to have your mover’s email or fax their COI (certificate of insurance) to your new landlord as soon as you have booked them. Many buildings are strict about having your mover's COI on file before you move in, and you don't want to arrive at the building with your truck and not be able to get in. Check with your Super beforehand that you are all set to go. Your broker will also remind you about this and tell you ahead of time if no weekend or holiday move-ins are allowed and what the building's move-in hours are.

Regarding your keys, I know everyone wants their keys as soon as they sign their lease. You can get them a day or two before your lease start date, and you may need to pay for those additional days any earlier than that. Another way to get a good head start on your move is to bring a tape measure to your showing to ensure your couch will fit in the elevator, or you'll know it needs to go up the stairs. You can measure for window treatments as well.

If friends are helping you move, I know you'll treat them well—get work gloves for them, have plenty of water available, and have a schedule that allows them to take breaks. Pack as much as possible in medium-sized boxes. They are a perfect size—easier to handle and free from a wine and spirits store. And have a pizza party for your friends after you're all moved in!

Sovereign Associates has a free, comprehensive, and beneficial Moving Guide that you can pick up in either Sovereign office or we can email a digital copy to you. It covers everything you'll need to know (including some things you may not have thought of) for a successful move. We can also recommend movers we have worked with and trust. We hope you will love your new apartment, and we are happy to help you settle in.
