Audubon Mural Project

Locations Throughout NYC

If you’re ever walking around Uptown and come across a massive mural of a bird, don't be surprised. The Audubon Mural Project was started to help raise awareness for endangered birds in the United States. The National Audubon Society was founded as a bird conservation organization in 1896. They have done conservation work all throughout the United States and the mural project started in New York City in 2014.

The project was inspired by bird lover John James Audubon who once called Uptown NYC his home. He was an avid bird lover and wanted to protect the birds that were going extinct. Today, 314 North American species are threatened because of climate change. The National Audubon Society came up with the idea to spread awareness through art and in a place where thousands of people will pass per day. The organization decided to commission artists to create murals representing each of the 314 birds that are threatened. Today they have 67 murals around the city and are working to create murals for every bird. Some of them take up a small area, like the side of some stairs, while others cover an entire side of a building.

The project has received a lot of press from NY Times articles to video tours. Their whole goal is to make an impact on the way that we treat our environment. The National Audubon Society does so much more than getting murals painted. They do tons of hands on conservation work and have locations throughout the United States. They have an Audubon Adventures location right here in our very own NYC. They offer camps and activities for kids to learn about the environment and become impactors. This project is an amazing feat and only going to get more impressive, so take a walk around the neighborhood and try to keep your eye out for some giant birds migrating to our backyard.
