One of my favorite things to do, ever since I was little, was going to farmer’s markets. I don’t know why, but they have always attracted me and made me super happy. Probably because it was such a different experience than going to the normal grocery store. In New York City Farmer’s Markets, have grown in the last 15 years and now they are all over the city as a means to promote healthy eating and eating locally since it is both better for you and better for the environment.
GrowNYC has pushed efforts for New York citizens to be more aware of food waste and production, so their compost programs and farmer’s market programs are helping to build that awareness. The Inwood Greenmarket is one of the many farmer’s markets that has popped up in New York and they have been able to run year-round instead of just seasonally like many others. It makes a big difference having local food producers come and sell the produce, baked goods, and treats themselves. It feels more personal and safer to know exactly where your food has come from.
Vendors come from all over the state, mostly in nearby counties, to sell their goods and the market does a great job of bringing in variety. They bring in farms for meat and produce, as well as well-known companies like Ronnybrook Farm Dairy who produce amazing dairy products. My personal favorite is Bread Alone, a bakery from Ulster County that serves amazing breads and pastries. I have gone to their stores upstate a few times and my personal favorite would have to be their health-grain bread. It’s incredibly tasty and thankfully, filled with good nutrients.
The market is open on Saturdays from 8:00am-3:00am. Another plus, is that they accept multiple payment forms including, Cash, SNAP/EBT, Debit/Credit, WIC & Senior FMNP coupons accepted. ?Farmer’s markets are wonderful places to enjoy a weekend afternoon and I would highly suggest checking out the Inwood Greenmarket while it’s still nice out, even though you can go all year-round.
