GARDENING UPDATE FROM 185TH ST

May 16,2023 | By Sovereign Associates |

For 3 years now, we’ve been delighted to garden an unused area of flowerbeds here in the Heights. Seren does most of the gardening, but Greg is always around for heavy lifting when required! Previously we mentioned that some of the original plants came from the old 125th street MacDonald’s forecourt, but we’ve added new plants every year (sometimes from the dead and dying section at Lowes, which can be had for a bargain price).

This time of year, the roses are getting underway. We’ve planted climbing roses too, which we hope will scramble up the wall and give a brilliant show in years to come.   We’ve also registered the garden with the Monarch society, as we have milkweed and other natives which support Monarch butterfly caterpillars. Our birdfeeders are popular with our native birds and create a pleasant sense of movement around the garden.

While I was out pruning the other day, standing still I noticed a nesting bird looking right at me! In the fork of the tree, the bird had built this year’s nest and was sitting on it. Its brilliant to see wildlife up close on a city street.

Some years ago, Greg rescued a model of a knight (the shining armor type) which he was bold enough to place in the flowerbed. The knight has been such a hit with folk who walk by – kids love giving a cheery wave, and many adults report they talk to him. This winter he got a new coat of paint and is back in place at the corner of 185th and Pinehurst Avenue. We hope you enjoy these photos!
