151st Street Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge

The long awaited 151st Street Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge of Hamilton Heights has finally opened.

Walkers, joggers and bicyclist have a new and safer way to access the ballfields and park across the Henry Hudson Highway.

The bridge was scheduled to open in late 2016, but an inspection of the construction site revealed faulty cement and other construction issues. The work stopped for a while, the old cement was removed before construction resumed.

The approach to the bridge is a series of long wide cement switchbacks, great for jogging and even pushing strollers. The bridge is a Tied Arch Bridge design, which looks impressive. Flowers and shrubs were planted right before the bridge entrance.

There is also platform on the Park side with a fantastic view of the George Washington Bridge, which will prove to be a great selfie spot.

Before the bridge, residents had to access the park by riding an elevator or a stairwell at Riverbank State Park at 145 St. Now it’s a much more direct route to the park especially for residents further uptown. There are plans for a dog park as well.

The bridge was recently christened as the Assemblyman Herman Denny Farrell Pedestrian Bridge. The Assemblyman was instrumental in the getting the overpass built.
