How to Get Your NYC Identification Card

Did you know that the free New York City identification card (“IDNYC”) offers a long list of benefits to enjoy New York City to its fullest?  And it’s easy to get your own card. All you need is proof that you live in NYC (such as your apartment lease and a Con Ed bill) and your government-issued photo ID (drivers license, identification card, passport, etc.)  "NYC" includes all 5 boroughs:  Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.

Once you have the card, it will provide access to city buildings and services. But the benefits don’t stop there—if you’re looking for free memberships at major museums and cultural centers, shopping discounts and entertainment deals, you won’t be disappointed.

 

Here’s what the city says about it: “The IDNYC card is free for all New Yorkers who apply during the first year of the program – until December 31, 2016. Cards are valid for five years from the date the application is approved. The application process is accessible to people with limited English proficiency and people with disabilities.”

Below is a summary of the most popular IDNYC card benefits:

>Free one-year memberships at 40 museums and cultural centers

(Note: to get your free memberships, you must sign up at each center’s members desk with your IDNYC card by the deadline of 12/31/16)

  • Use the IDNYC card as your primary ID to open an account at select financial institutions.

> Health & Fitness Discounts

  • NYC Parks Department
  • YMCA
  • Citi Bike

> Supermarket Discounts

  • Food Bazaar 5% off purchases, Monday-Friday

> Use it as a library card at the Brooklyn, New York and Queens Public Library Systems.

  • Take your IDNYC card to a librarian to make it your library card.

> Animal Care Centers of New York (ACC)

  • $25 off the adoption fees for cats, dogs, and rabbits.
