Compost, Compost, Compost!
Being a city of over 8 million people can make it seem hard to do things like gardening and composting, which are much easier in neighborhoods where everyone has their own backyard. The NYC Sanitation Department is working to change this perception. No matter where you are or what your living situation, they are making it possible for everyone to compost and to help fuel urban gardening.
One of the main questions regarding composting is “why?” What and who does it benefit? Food waste in New York city composes 17% of all waste and contributes to the creation of greenhouse gas emissions. It also increases the city’s disposal costs and thus increases city taxes that we have to pay. Increasing compost will not only decrease costs, but it will also be a healthier and environmentally friendly way to fertilize our gardens, trees, and parks. Composting reduces the amount of chemicals that go into our gardening efforts.
This program that is being started around the neighborhood is super simple to be a part of. Most of us have a garbage can in our home and all you need to do is add a second bin and place your food scraps in it. The NYC Sanitation Department has made a clear web page listing the way the composting program works, but one important piece of information is what not to recycle. This means, “NO meat, chicken, fish, greasy food scraps, fat, oil, dairy, animal waste, litter or bedding, coal or charcoal, coconuts, diseased and/or insect-infested houseplants/soil or biodegradable/compostable plastics.” Once you adjust to separating your food scraps, it is so easy to just package up the bag and drop it off at your local composting station.
